If you're searching "how many questions are on the AME regs exam," here's the short answer and the rules around it, from Transport Canada's own documents.

The short answer

Transport Canada's AME regulations exam (REGS), described in TP 14038, is 50 multiple-choice questions with 4 choices each, and you need 70% to pass, with a 3-hour time limit.

TP 14038 notes that the number of questions listed for each exam is approximate. The 70% passing grade for the regulatory requirements exam is set in Standard 566.03(5), and MSI 18 Appendix D states that all Transport Canada AME exams are closed book.

How the questions are built

Every question has a stem (the introductory statement) and four options: one correct answer, which TP 14038 calls "the key," and three wrong answers, "the distracters." You pick the one correct answer.

TP 14038 says REGS questions can be based on:

  • Application: knowing what a regulation requires in a given situation (who can sign, what must be recorded, when something is due).

  • Location: knowing where a specific regulation is found.

That second type catches people out. If you've only memorized answers, a "where is this rule?" question can feel like a trick. If you've learned how the CARs and Standards are numbered, it's free marks.

What's in scope

The exam draws on CARs Parts I, II, IV, V, VI and VII, and on the Standards that go with them (defects, technical records, maintenance release, life-limited parts, elementary work, weight and balance and more). See our study guide, Part by Part for the full map.

Who can write it, and when

  • You can get approval once you have all but 6 months of the total experience required for your rating.

  • Approval is issued on AME Licence Application form 24-0083 and is valid for 12 months.

  • You don't have to prove the skill (maintenance task) requirement before writing, but it must be done within that 12-month approval.

  • A REGS pass is valid for 12 months from the date you write it.

If you don't pass

Under Standard 566.03(6), after a first failure you can't rewrite sooner than 30 days later. After a second or later failure, you have to wait six months each time. MSI 18 notes that a rewrite uses a different exam series and needs the rewrite fee. So the cheapest way to write the REGS is to write it once, prepared.

What to bring

MSI 18 Appendix D lists the exam-room requirements:

  1. Government-issued photo ID with a signature

  2. Your approved AME Licence Application form 24-0083

  3. A copy of your exam fee payment receipt

Exams are invigilated at a Transport Canada Regional Service Centre, by appointment only.
