How and When to Book Your Transport Canada AME REGS Exam

Booking the REGS isn't hard, but the timing rules trip people up. Apply too early and you can't write it. Leave it too late in your approval window and you're re-applying and paying again. Here's how it works, from Transport Canada's own instructions.

Step 1: Check you're eligible

You can get approval to write the regulatory requirements exam once you have all but 6 months of the total aviation maintenance experience required for your rating (MSI 18, Appendix D). For an M1 or M2 rating, Transport Canada lists a total of 48 months, so with no training credit you could apply at 42 months. Approved basic training can reduce the total; see AME licence requirements in Canada.

If your basic training wasn't from a TC-approved training organization, you'll write the technical exams first (applied for on form 26-0638), then apply for the REGS.

Step 2: Apply on form 24-0083

The REGS approval is issued on the AME Licence Application, form 24-0083. Once Transport Canada accepts the application, you're authorized to write the exam after paying the charge set in CAR 104.

The clock starts here. The approval is valid for 12 months. The exam must be passed, and your skill (maintenance task) requirement completed, within that window. If not, you'll have to submit a new application, pay the fees again and rewrite the exam.

Step 3: Book a seat

Exams are invigilated at a Transport Canada Regional Service Centre of your choice, by appointment only. Contact the office in advance to make sure there's space at the time you want. If you need an accommodation for a disability or condition, contact the Centre directly before you book.

Step 4: When to book

Our rule of thumb: book once you're scoring 80%+ on two timed practice exams in a row. Booking a date two or three weeks out also gives your study a deadline. That's what the 14-Day REGS Pass Plan is built around.

Step 5: What to bring on the day

  1. Government-issued photo ID with a signature

  2. Your approved 24-0083 application

  3. A copy of your exam fee payment receipt

The exam is closed book. Transport Canada's AME regulations exam (REGS), described in TP 14038, is 50 multiple-choice questions with 4 choices each, and you need 70% to pass, with a 3-hour time limit.

After the exam

  • Passed? A REGS pass is valid for 12 months from the date you write it, so finish anything outstanding (logbook and skill tasks) and get your licence application through. Transport Canada lists 40 working days for processing.

  • Didn't pass? Under Standard 566.03(6), you can't rewrite sooner than 30 days after a first failure, or six months after a second or later failure. A rewrite uses a different series and needs the rewrite fee.
